I always get headache when trying to interpret Freeciv&#8217;s isometric tilesets.<\/p>\n<p>Freeciv offers four standard tilesets and you can install more or even make your own. Most of the time you can just switch the tileset without changes to the server.<\/p>\n<p>The current tileset can be changed from the client&#8217;s settings: <em>Game &#8211; Options &#8211; Local Client<\/em> under the <em>Tileset<\/em> option.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freecivbook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/amplio2-cropped.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-96 colorbox-95\" title=\"amplio2-cropped\" src=\"https:\/\/www.freecivbook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/amplio2-cropped-300x157.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.freecivbook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/amplio2-cropped-300x157.png 300w, https:\/\/www.freecivbook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/amplio2-cropped-500x263.png 500w, https:\/\/www.freecivbook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/amplio2-cropped.png 665w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Amplio2 is Freeciv&#8217;s newest tileset and the default. It&#8217;s isometric and much bigger in resolution than other tilesets shipped with Freeciv. I personally do think it&#8217;s much more clean &#8212; even almost usable &#8212; but I don&#8217;t like the small amount of tiles this tileset allows on the screen. I&#8217;m not going to use it before Freeciv offers a way to zoom the map.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freecivbook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/isotrident-cropped.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-97 colorbox-95\" title=\"isotrident-cropped\" src=\"https:\/\/www.freecivbook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/isotrident-cropped-300x159.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"159\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.freecivbook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/isotrident-cropped-300x159.png 300w, https:\/\/www.freecivbook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/isotrident-cropped.png 466w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Isotrident was Freeciv&#8217;s previous default tileset (some years ago). It was the first isometric tileset to replace the original trident tileset.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freecivbook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/trident-cropped.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-98 colorbox-95\" title=\"trident-cropped\" src=\"https:\/\/www.freecivbook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/trident-cropped.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"292\" height=\"287\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Trident is Freeciv&#8217;s original 2D tileset. In my opinion it&#8217;s still the best and most clear tileset available.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freecivbook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/isophex-cropped.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-99 colorbox-95\" title=\"isophex-cropped\" src=\"https:\/\/www.freecivbook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/isophex-cropped-300x162.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"162\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.freecivbook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/isophex-cropped-300x162.png 300w, https:\/\/www.freecivbook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/isophex-cropped.png 440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Isophex is the only hexagonal tileset shipped with Freeciv. Though it can be used with a &#8220;normal&#8221; 2D\/isotrident server, it does not make much sense unless used with a hexagonal-type Freeciv server.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>You can install more tilesets from <a href=\"http:\/\/freeciv.wikia.com\/wiki\/Tilesets\" target=\"_blank\">Freeciv&#8217;s homepage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Installing tilesets in Linux<\/h3>\n<p>For example in Linux tilesets can be installed simply by unpacking the package under <em>~\/.freeciv\/2.3<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><code>wget http:\/\/download.gna.org\/freeciv\/contrib\/tilesets\/freeland\/freeland-3.0-Beta2-normal--freeciv-2.3.x.tar.gz<br \/>\ncd .freeciv\/2.3\/<br \/>\nzcat ~\/freeland-3.0-Beta2-normal--freeciv-2.3.x.tar.gz|tar xf -<\/code><\/p>\n<h3>Installing tilesets in Windows 7<\/h3>\n<p>On my Windows 7 the right place to unpack the tileset package was  <em>C:\\Users\\<strong>user<\/strong>\\AppData\\Local\\VirtualStore\\Program Files\\Freeciv-2.3.0-gtk2<\/em>. However I&#8217;m not sure if this is the correct place always.
